Slot myths: hot machines, cold machines, due jackpots and lucky hours
A slot is never hot, cold or due. Each spin of an online slot is an independent result from a random number generator, so a run of wins or losses does not change the chance of the next spin. In Kenya, regulation 45(2) of L.N. 112 requires that generator to be certified and tested for randomness.

Why do slot myths feel true?
Slot myths grow out of streaks. A game pays three times in ten minutes and feels hot, while another goes fifty spins without a feature and feels cold. Random results bunch together far more often than intuition expects, and the mind reads the bunches as a pattern.
In an online slot, the outcome of each spin is picked by a random number generator. How that software works is set out in how random number generators work in slots. The myths below all clash with one property of it: independence.
Is a slot ever hot or cold?
No. A slot has no memory of its last result. Each spin is drawn fresh, so the chance of a win is the same after a win, after a loss and after a long dry run.
Lab testing targets exactly this property. GLI, an independent test lab, says a random number generator must be fully tested to ensure non-predictability and that no biases exist towards certain game outcomes. A game that paid more after a cold spell would be predictable, which is the flaw such testing looks for.
Kenya writes the testing into law. Regulation 45(2) of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations, 2026 (L.N. 112) requires the random number generator for all games of chance to be certified by the Authority or an agent it approves, with statistical tests of randomness and of the theoretical return to player.
The gambler's fallacy, in numbers
The gambler's fallacy is the belief that a run of losses makes a win more likely. Long runs are a normal part of random play, and one tells you nothing about the next spin.
Illustrative example: imagine a feature that lands on one spin in five, a 20% chance per spin. The table shows how often a run of misses of each length happens, and the chance on the very next spin after it. The 20% figure is invented for the arithmetic.
| Spins in a row without the feature | Chance of a run that long | Chance the next spin lands it |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 32.77% | 20% |
| 10 | 10.74% | 20% |
| 20 | 1.15% | 20% |
| 30 | 0.12% | 20% |
A run of ten misses turns up about one time in nine, so it appears often over a long session. After it, the next spin is still one in five, no better. The streak is history, and history does not feed into the next draw.
Illustrative example: with a 1 in 100 chance per spin, 100 spins bring at least one hit only 63.4% of the time. After 300 spins there is still a 4.9% chance of no hit at all. A game that has not paid for a while is not running out of losing spins.
Is a jackpot ever due?
A jackpot triggered by a random combination is never due. The pool can grow for months, yet the chance of the winning combination on any one spin stays where the game's maths put it. The size of the pool shows how many stakes have gone in, not how near the win is.
Some jackpots are designed to pay by a set time, and their terms say so. Kenyan law also has a rule for a jackpot nobody wins: regulation 80(3) of L.N. 112 requires a jackpot that stays unwon for over twenty-four months to be cascaded to lower combinations until someone wins it.
Both are written rules you can read in advance, not hidden timing. Pools and contributions are covered in how progressive jackpot slots work.
Does the time of day or the day of the month matter?
Not to a certified random number generator. A payday, a late night or a weekend can feel lucky, but if a slot paid better at certain hours its results could be predicted from the clock. That is the kind of bias towards outcomes the testing described above is meant to rule out.
GLI lists the investigation of seeding and re-seeding and the inspection of background cycling among the items its RNG evaluations typically include.
What certification means for these myths
Certification is the reason the myths fail, and it is often misread too. GLI says it can test, inspect or certify products for conformity with GLI Standards and with the requirements of each jurisdiction. A certificate does not say a game is generous, and it does not promise any result in a session.
GLI says its RNG evaluations typically include source code review, the period and range of the generator, the DIEHARD battery of tests and outcome distribution tests. iTech Labs, another lab, lists RNG testing and audit for online casino games next to maths and payout testing of odds and payout structures.
The return figure is a long-run average, not a session forecast. Pragmatic Play's own page for Sweet Bonanza lists an RTP of 96.48%, which describes results over a very large number of spins, and how far one session can swing depends on slot volatility. Regulation 45(4) of L.N. 112 requires each game's theoretical return to player to be disclosed to the Authority, and regulation 45(3) has the Authority evaluate or certify game rules every year.
What a lab's paperwork covers, and what it leaves out, is explained in what a test lab certificate attests.
Slot myths and the facts behind them
| Myth | What actually decides it | Where the rule comes from |
|---|---|---|
| This slot is hot, so keep going | Each spin is a fresh random draw; recent wins do not raise the next spin's chance | L.N. 112, r.45(2); GLI RNG testing |
| This slot is cold, so it is due | A losing run does not raise the next spin's chance; long runs are normal | The illustrative table above |
| The jackpot is huge, so it will drop soon | For a jackpot with a random trigger, pool size does not change the odds; timed jackpots follow written terms | Gambling Control Act, 2025, s.2; L.N. 112, r.80(3) |
| Slots pay better at night or on payday | A certified generator is tested for non-predictability and no bias towards outcomes | GLI RNG testing scope |
| The casino tightens a game after a big win | Each game's theoretical RTP is disclosed to the Authority, and game rules are evaluated or certified every year | L.N. 112, r.45(3) and (4) |
| An RTP of 96.48% returns KES 96.48 from every KES 100 in a session | RTP is a long-run average over very many spins; one session can differ widely | Pragmatic Play, Sweet Bonanza game page |
| A certified slot is a generous slot | A certificate attests testing against a standard, not a payout level | GLI certification; iTech Labs services |
What this guide does not cover
No systems, staking plans or timing advice appear here, because none can change a random draw. It does not compare or rank games.
Believing a game is due can turn a short session into a long one. Operators must offer deposit, loss and session limits and reality-check pop-ups under regulation 84 of L.N. 112, and the help and limits page shows where to find them.
Questions and answers
Do online slots have hot and cold streaks?
Streaks happen, because random results often bunch together, but they predict nothing. Each spin is an independent draw from a random number generator, which GLI says must be tested for non-predictability and no bias towards certain outcomes. In Kenya, regulation 45(2) of L.N. 112 requires that generator to be certified by the Authority or its approved agent.
Is a slot more likely to pay after a long losing run?
No. The chance on the next spin is the same as on every other spin. In an illustrative game where a feature lands with a 20% chance per spin, a run of ten misses happens about 10.74% of the time, and the eleventh spin still has a 20% chance. Believing otherwise is the gambler's fallacy.
Does playing at a certain time of day change slot odds?
No. A certified random number generator is tested so that its results cannot be predicted, and a game that paid better at certain hours would be predictable. Predictability and bias towards outcomes are what lab testing of the generator is meant to rule out. GLI lists seeding, re-seeding and background cycling among the items its RNG evaluations typically include.
Does a certified slot pay back its RTP in every session?
No. RTP is a long-run average over a very large number of spins. Pragmatic Play lists Sweet Bonanza's RTP as 96.48%, yet one session can end far above or below that figure. Certification attests that the game was tested against a standard; it does not promise a result in any session or say the game is generous.
Can a progressive jackpot be due to drop?
Not when a random combination triggers it. The pool size only shows how much has been staked, not how near a win is. Some jackpots are designed to pay by a set time and say so in their terms. Separately, regulation 80(3) of L.N. 112 has a jackpot that stays unwon for over 24 months cascaded to lower combinations.
