What is a scatter symbol in a slot?
A scatter symbol is a special slot symbol that counts wherever it lands on the reels, with no payline or run of adjacent reels needed. Landing a set number of scatters in one spin can start a feature such as free spins, and in some games the scatters also pay a prize. The paytable states how many are needed.

Scatter symbol: the definition
A scatter symbol is a special slot symbol that counts wherever it lands. The game adds up how many scatters appear in a spin instead of checking whether they line up, so they need no payline and no run of adjacent reels. Ordinary symbols in a payline game pay only along fixed paths, and that contrast is what the word describes.
Test lab standards treat scatters as a pay method of their own. Section 4.4.3(e)(ii) of GLI-19, the interactive gaming standard of Gaming Laboratories International, requires the artwork to indicate how individual symbols are evaluated, either on adjacent reels only or as scatter pays. Section 4.4.1(n) asks it to state which symbols may act as a scatter and in which winning combinations.
How scatters trigger features
In many slots a scatter's job is to open a feature, such as a round of free spins. GLI-19 section 4.4.1(o) asks the artwork to explain how symbols must appear for a feature to be triggered, with numbers showing how many symbols each pattern needs.
Some scatters also pay a prize. Where one symbol can win as a line pay and a scatter pay at the same time, section 4.4.1(j)(ii) asks the artwork to say whether both wins are paid or only the greater one.
Some games also sell entry to the feature, so a player can skip the scatter trigger; the bonus buy feature explains how that purchase works.
Example: Big Bass Bonanza
Pragmatic Play's page for Big Bass Bonanza states that 3, 4 and 5 scatters trigger the free spins feature with 10, 15 and 20 free spins respectively. The count of scatters in the triggering spin sets the length of the feature. The same page lists the game's RTP as 96.71%.
Illustrative example: four scatters land in one base game spin, spread across the screen with no line joining them. Under the rule on the provider's page, that spin starts the feature with 15 free spins.
What a scatter does not do
A scatter does not make a feature due after a dry spell. GLI-19 section 4.5.2(d)(i) says a game shall not adjust the likelihood of a bonus or feature based on the history of awards in previous games.
Questions and answers
Can a wild symbol replace a scatter?
It depends on the game, and the paytable says which way it works. GLI-19 section 4.4.1(m) asks the artwork to state which symbols act as a wild and in which winning combinations. Nolimit City's page for Punk Rocker, for example, describes wilds that substitute for any symbol except the scatter, so in that game a wild cannot stand in for one.
Do scatter symbols pay money on their own?
In some games they do, and in others they only start a feature. GLI-19 treats scatter pays as a pay method and asks the artwork to say how coinciding scatter wins are handled, for example whether several scattered combinations pay every award or only the highest. The paytable of the game you open shows which rule applies.
